Ayurvedic lifestyle emphasizes the principles of Ritucharya (Seasonal Food Eating Habits). Our body reacts differently to the same food items in different seasons. Eating yogurt in summer can cause a cooling effect but eating that in cold January months can cause sore throat, cold or more. Therefore, it is essential to stay in eating food that offers seasonal, nutritious value.

Ritucharya for the Cold season:

The cold season makes our bodies more lethargic with low energy levels due to higher Kapha deposition. To maintain the energy level, it is necessary to stay active. Some of the tips to stay healthy in the cold season are:

  • Stay active; try to get at least 7K to 10K steps per day.
  • Take 5 minutes to walk every couple of hours to avoid body stiffness
  • Practice pranayama and yoga
  • Dress warm
  • Include food items made from whole grains, pulses, milk, ginger, garlic, Vitamin, and antioxidant-rich fruits like Orange, Apple, Kiwi, Pear, Lemon, and Grapefruit.

Ritucharya for the Hot Season:

Summer is a Vata season, with a low digestion power and relaxed Kapha. Relaxed Kapha causes an increase in body heat levels, so it is highly recommended to consume food that offers cooling effects. Some of the tips for surviving the heatwave are:

  • Maintain moderate activity level, including a nice morning jog, relaxing Yin yoga, and meditation
  • Drink plenty of electrolyte-rich fluids
  • Consume summer herbs like Amalaki, ashwagandha, Basil, Arjuna, Bacopa, Boswellia
  • Wear cotton clothes to avoid rashes
  • Drink mango, sugarcane, lemon juice, buttermilk, and smoothies
  • Include food items like rice, milk, lentils, and fruits, that are easy to digest.
