keyaHere at Ayurved Marketplace, we've been focusing on renewal and rejuvenation over the past few weeks. If you're in the Northern Hemisphere, you're seeing flowers and trees bloom, grass getting greener, and feeling more sunshine. How can you NOT want to throw out the old and begin with the new? Just as many of use use this time to renew our environments with lighter colors and fabrics, we should also do the same with our bodies by eating lighter fare than we did during the cold days of winter. Below are some simple suggestions to start this new season with a lighter step, physically and spiritually.

  1. Eat lighter foods at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Fresh fruits, herbal tea, grains, steamed vegetables, and legumes should top your menu.
  2. Ensure you drink enough water, but keep it no cooler than room temperature. Cold water can disturb the digestion process. This also applies to other cold drinks.
  3. Load up on fresh vegetables. Try not to eat a lot of raw vegetables because they are harder to digest than cooked food. Steamed vegetables are easier on your system but still contain all those great nutrients. Bitter greens and vegetables in the cabbage family (cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower) are particularly good.
  4. Eat spicy but not heavy foods. Spicy foods can infuse you with vitality and strength. Fried foods and heavy fruits (bananas, coconuts, dates) can lead to digestive issues.
  5. Add a variety of herbs and spices to your food. Onions, garlic, ginger, chili pepper, and black pepper are ideal for flavorful meals.
  6. Minimize your diary intake, especially in the morning. Dairy can cause digestion problems for some, and for others it's simply indigestible. Try replacing your dairy with nut and rice alternatives such as almond milk or rice milk. Don't substitute dairy with soy, as it is also a very hard protein to digest.
  7. Eat less meat, especially pork and red meat. A vegetarian diet is best, but if you must eat meat keep it to a minimum as it is more difficult to digest.

To add variety to your day, drink a variety of teas containing lemon, ginger, coriander, cumin, fennel and/or black pepper. You may enjoy (click on each to learn more):
